Group Details Edit Group Details

Status: Completed
Chair(s): Tobias Weigel, Tim DiLauro
Group Description:

In complex data domains, unique and persistent identifiers (PIDs) associated with specific information are the core of proper data management and access. They can be used to give every data object (including collection objects) an identity that enables referring to the data resources and metadata and, additionally, to prove integrity, authenticity and other attributes. But this requires a PID to be uniquely associated with specific types of information, and those types and their association with PIDs must be well managed. Therefore it is useful to specify a framework for information types, to start agreeing on some essential types, and to define a process by which other types can be integrated. The framework provides generic facilities only, which can and must be employed by specific communities to support their needs. The focus of the working group therefore is on cross-community concerns.

Termination at RDA P4 Amsterdam

The PID Information Types WG was set to terminate after 18 months of activity at the Amsterdam 4th RDA Plenary. This was the last session of the WG with a look at the final deliverables and discussion of already emerging future activities within RDA.

After P4, the WG entered the official RDA outcomes process as one of the first groups to do so. The deliverables as listed above were bundled in a package and submitted.

I have some questions. Who shall I contact?

Simply contact one of the WG chairs, Timothy DiLauro or Tobias Weigel.

What about follow-up activities?

DKRZ is active in furthering the outcoms of PIT and the general concepts of information types and type registries within the EUDAT project and the ESGF infrastructure. Other initiatives such as the Deep Carbon Observatory and the Materials Genome Initiative innovation infrastructure as represented in the Materials Data IG have also indicated potential interest. Activities will also continue within RDA with possible follow-up WGs.
