    Dear all,
Please find below my notes from the last call, which may be of use:
Brief Notes from Legal Interoperability Call, Fri 29 Jan
    Aim of the document?
    – still feels like parts of an elephant rather than the whole.
What is the document supposed to do?
State clearly principles and guidelines that lead to legal interoperability.
We need to make solid deployable recommendations for todays world, while also making clear statements to encourage those who can make changes to do so.
State clearly the benefits of CC0
State clearly that defence of wish for acknowledgement/recognition is best achieved by cultural norms, not by legal requirements.
State clearly that you need to possess the rights in order to waive them.
Recast the recommendations to make clear to whom they are addressed.
Need to make clear that CC0 applies to data and CC-BY may be appropriate for articles…
Next week: go through the comments on principles. PU will send round draft comments on the general principles.
The call on Friday 5 February will be back to the usual time.
    CODATA-RDA Legal Interoperability Group Call, Friday 5 January, 14.00 UTC / 15.00 CET / 9.00am Eastern / 6.00am Pacific

    Hi all:
Attached are the draft responses to the reviewer comments on the Principles
and on the Summary comments. Please note that Principle 5 on Metadata has
been merged with the “Transparency and Clarity” Principle; there has been a
new Principle Two added (“Determine the legal rights to and
responsibilities for the data”); and the last two Principles are proposed
to be merged with Principles/Guidelines for 1, 2, and 4. Also, the
Principles have been shortened to one sentence, with the paragraph text to
be moved to the Guidelines text (next week). All these changes were
suggested by the reviewers and I agree with them, but we need to discuss it
on the telcon this Friday. All the other comments are important, but will
not be discussed on the call, unless there is some time left.
Everyone should read the comments and draft responses, and send any further
changes by email to the group. Your silence will be considered your assent
if you have not responded by February 19th. There will be another
opportunity to revisit these documents prior to the September RDA and
    CODATA Conference in Denver.
I also am forwarding Simon’s earlier message with the telcon instructions
for tomorrow and his notes from the call last Friday.
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Dear all,

I’ve recently started writing a report for FAO commisoned by EGI on legal interoperability in the fishery and marine sciences sector. I just ran into the reminder for a call today, would I be allowed to join in and (probably mostly) listen? I think this would be a great opportunity to hear where you are on this tedious topic.

    Thanks,
    Eise van Maanen (FAO)

    Dear Eise,
We are at the point of discussing edits and feedback on the current draft.
But you are of course, most welcome to join the call.
    With very best wishes,
    Simon.
