Timea BiroParticipantDear all,
This is just to let you know that we have published the Ambassadors overview page on the RDA website https://www.rd-alliance.org/rda-disciplines/rda-europe-ambassadors
Thank you for sending the information in. We have done minor edits to text and photos to harmonize them, please feel free to check and suggest any updates or corrections if necessary. We now also have an external contact list now set up now and will be promoting that as the way of contacting you.
As you might have seen from previous exchanges we would like to promote the use of the Frascati R&D categorisation in reference to disciplines https://read.oecd-ilibrary.org/science-and-technology/frascati-manual-20…
We kindly ask you to review the list and suggest what would be the best fitting title for you. If appropriate, it should be in the format broad classification / second-level classification e.g. Engineering and technology / Materials engineering, if not, it can be just the broad classification e.g. Social Sciences , if you feel that is more suitable and a better reflection of your work.
Thank you for your patience, we know we have already had an exchange on this but it is a work in progress with other activities and we think it would be good to align as much as and as soon as possible. We have also just now included it as mandatory field for the applications to the 2nd Ambassadors Open Call launched yesterday.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you need more information or clarifications.
Many thanks and best regards,
Timea

Francoise GenovaMemberDear Timea,
Thanks for the link to the overview page. I am preparing a message to
the RDA France list, which will also include information about the
second call for candidates.
One question is about suggesting that the Ambassadors can be contacted
by the community. For me it is important to allow this kind of direct
link. What do the Ambassadors think about it?
If it is OK we have to provide the community with a way to send a
message to the Ambassador they want to get in touch with. Some people
may not want to display their emails too prominently. Could we provide
the Contact page of the individual’s personal page? Sorry if it is done
already, I did not find it…
Cheers

Timea BiroMemberHi Francoise,
Yes, there is an external contact list to be used to contact the Ambassadors. I did mention it in my email below, sorry if it wasn’t clear. The contact list is ***@***.***-alliance.org, available on the overview page (can highlight it in a different colour to make it more visible).
If any of the Ambassadors also wishes to have their email address listed on the website, we can do that, of course. We didn’t want to take it for granted since many use their institutional one or might have privacy concerns if their personal one gets listed.
We are open to and support whatever the individual choice is but have provided a contact list on behalf of the project so as to make sure whoever wishes to contact the Ambassadors has that option available.
Many thanks,
Timea

Francoise GenovaMemberThanks, Timea, for the clarification. It is good indeed to have the generic ambassador list available, I was thinking about people from a given field willing to contact ‘their’ ambassador. Maybe this can go first to the generic email list and continue through a private discussion.
In some cases it might be more efficient to have a personal contact from the start, when people hear about someone in their community for instance, but it is true that if private emails are to be exposed it is a serious issue. What do the ambassadors think?

julien bardeMemberHi Timea,
for what regards the title in the Frascati R&D categorisation: “1.
Natural Sciences / 1.2 Computer and information sciences” would be the
relevant classification in my case.
Concerning the best way to contact us, the contact list is fine but I
have nothing against having my email published in the RDA pages (in the
page list of ambassadors and in my RDA user page). I think it would be
better and it is possible to display an email address properly and to
keep it crypted for robots. As far as I understand, the form that can be
used to contact a RDA user via his personnal Web page requires to be
logged in (and thus to be a RDA user) and I think it should be more open
since not everybody knows the RDA (or is not registered as a RDA user).
Have a good day

Nikola VasiljevićMemberDear all,
I agree with Julien. I don’t mind having my email address published on the RDA site.
Something that might help other ambassadors, and for which I would like a feedback from all of you:
What I started doing slowly (high emphasis on slowly) in my community (wind energy) is to form a European (wind energy) group of data practitioners which will include at least one member from each European country who are affiliated to a wind energy related entity (institute, university, company, etc.). Most likely I will ‘recruit’ members doing a wind energy related conference in June in Cork, where (thanks to René for inspiration), I will give a talk:
“Who is the RDA, and what it can do for you”
This group will be the backbone of the RDA IG on wind energy, which will implement the RDA outputs and recommendations across Europe, as well bring our experience back to the RDA.
In this way if there are questions, in my case wind energy community, there will be more than a single person who can help, and at least one person per country.
Last year I done something similar at the national level (Denmark), where I led a group of 20+ people who lay down foundations for making wind energy data FAIR. Here is a short summary of the outcome:

Francoise GenovaMemberDear Nikola,
Thank you for the information. It is a very good example of ambassador’s
activity, applicable to domains which do not yet have a disciplinary
Group in RDA. A possible milestone, which may well already be in your
plans, could be to propose a BoF session for the Helsinki Plenary (23-25
October), to discuss an IG proposal to discuss FAIRization of wind
energy data at the international level.
The situation is a bit different in domains which already have a
relevant disciplinary IG, the point being then to bring topics and
people to RDA, and to disseminate the Group activities and outcomes in
the community, in addition to exploring other Groups and interacting
with them.
Best regards

Many thanks for the feedback and suggestion for the Helsinki meeting.
I planned to come to Helsinki, but now with your suggestion I have a concrete milestone.
Also, I am trying to synchronize my work with the Danish RDA node (to generalize it), which also just started this year.
So I guess overall we are in an embryonic stage (i.e., wind energy and Danish RDA node).
Best regards,
Nikola

Francoise GenovaMemberThanks, Nicola. We can discuss the possible content of the BoF at a
later stage, but this requires preparatory work to put together an
interested community, which is what you have begun to do, and define
what you want to do. If the Cork conference is international, you may be
able to get international interest.
I am also talking with Julien and Sébastien on how to collaborate
between the French National Node and the ‘local’ Ambassadors. One idea
is to collaborate on the contacts with the national Research
Infrastructures (we have a National Reasearch Infrastructure Roadmap) in
their domains. The Research Infrastructures recognized at the national
level are often the national counterparts of ESFRIs or
European/international collaborations, which enables to contact a wider
community, in addition to direct discussions with the ESFRIs et al. This
is similar it seems to what you are doing and plan to do.

Caterina CaraccioloMemberHi Timea,
The page looks nice, thank you for setting it up!
As for the Frascati categories, for me you can take 1.2 (Computer and Information Science) and 4.1 (Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries). I would have given a third one, on statistics, but unfortunately I cannot find anything close enough in the list.
As for the contact, I also think a personal contact is better than a group address – no objections with showing my email contact, especially if encrypted.
Best
Caterina

Many thanks and best regards,
Timea

Ricarda BraukmannMemberHi Timea,
Thank you for setting this up.
For me the classification 5.9 Social Sciences – Other Social Sciences and 5.1 Psychology and Cognitive Sciences would be suitable.
I agree with the others that publishing my personal email address would be fine, if we can ensure we wont be spammed by robots.
Best wishes,
Ricarda
