A Decade of Data: The RDA’s 20th Plenary meeting

As a long-time attendee of the RDA, and a former Council Co-Chair, the highlight from the 20th Plenary event in Gothenburg was simply seeing colleagues in person after a hiatus of almost 3 years. The RDA community is a very strong and cohesive one, and this Plenary reinforced that. I attended elements of both the RDA Plenary and the EuroHPC Conference, which were both in Gothenburg over the same 3 days. The highlights from the RDA Plenary include a focus on global interoperability of open science infrastructures, the growth in Organizational members, and the ongoing importance of EOSC in all things data in the European context. The evolution of the Funders Forum, with a joint meeting between the RDA Funders Forum and ReSA’s Research Software Funders Forum was great to see, and I can imagine a lot more happening jointly between these two organizations. I was also impressed with the work that the community has done on the GORC International Model WG, with great leadership from Karen Payne and CJ Woodford from the WDS-ITO. With a draft of the final output anticipated for IDW in October, this is definitely one to watch.  

I was only able to attend one day of the EuroHPC event, but it reinforced the critical role data and software play in the DRI landscape – the two terms were used more frequently than any others, at least on the day I attended. With some new and emerging software and hardware-focused RDA groups (e.g. FAIR4ML, FAIR Principles for Research Hardware), I see another positive evolution in RDA continuing to look at the broader digital research infrastructure landscape.

As a newcomer to the RDA community, attending RDA’s 20th Plenary (RDA P20) in Gothenburg was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the organisation’s and community’s work and connect with colleagues from across the globe. I followed the Plenary Pathway for research software, attending Birds of a Feather (BoF) and IG meeting breakout sessions on code visibility, computational reproducibility, and the importance of making software reproducible. The international research software community is highly engaged and committed. I relished the opportunity to learn from and connect with many different stakeholders through these sessions. Participating in the Research Software Workshop: guidelines and metrics for metadata curation, a co-located event convened by FAIR-IMPACT and FAIRCORE4OSC, was also noteworthy.  

 
Prior to RDA P20, the Research Software Alliance (ReSA) and RDA successfully convened a joint hybrid meeting of the Research Software Funders Forum and the RDA Funders Forum. As a ReSA community manager, part of my role involves managing the Research Software Funders Forum, so this event was a highlight for me. The emphasis on and interest in research software from this engaged group of funders solidified the significance of this work.

Attending my first international conference has been an incredibly enriching experience. It was an opportunity for me to meet my overseas colleagues in person and strengthen my professional relationships. I also had the pleasure of meeting new colleagues and members of the open science community, which allowed me to broaden my (The Alliance) inter-professional network. The various conferences I attended provided me with valuable insights into current projects and initiatives that are shaping the future of research. As a representative of the Alliance, I was able to target potential future partners and identify initiatives and projects that could add value to research in Canada. Overall, the RDA’s 20th Plenary has been a valuable learning experience and has opened up new possibilities for collaboration and growth.

RDA P20 provided an excellent and flexible (hybrid) experience for me to attend the event. By attending the 3 half-day event, I was immersed in the broad range of topics of the RDA groups, not only focusing on research data but other research objects (e.g. research software ) and interoperability framework, etc., as well as their spirit of keeping pace with the latest technology (e.g., ethics of AI). The combination of collaborative session notes and interactive breakout sessions also gave me the same in-person experience as other RDA attendees. 

 
Une décennie de données – La 20e réunion plénière de la RDA

En tant que participant de longue date aux activités de la RDA et ancien coprésident du Conseil de l’organisation, j’ai particulièrement profité de la 20e réunion plénière tenue à Gothenburg pour rencontrer des collègues en personne après une pause de presque trois ans. La communauté de la RDA est très solide et tissée serrée, et la plénière a renforcé ces aspects. J’ai non seulement assisté à des conférences de la plénière de la RDA, mais aussi à quelques-unes du sommet EuroHPC, puisque ces deux événements se déroulaient en même temps à Gothenburg. Les sujets forts de la plénière de la RDA ont notamment porté sur l’interopérabilité mondiale des infrastructures de la science ouverte, la hausse du nombre de membres dans l’organisation et l’importance constante de l’EOSC dans tout ce qui touche les données en contexte européen. J’ai été ravi de constater, au cours d’une réunion conjointe entre le forum des bailleurs de fonds de la RDA et le forum des bailleurs de fonds des logiciels de recherche, à quel point le forum des bailleurs de fonds a évolué, et je peux m’imaginer que bien d’autres événements auront lieu conjointement entre ces deux organisations. J’ai aussi été impressionné par le travail que la communauté a accompli à l’égard du groupe de travail sur le modèle international du GORC grâce au formidable leadership de Karen Payne et CJ Woodford du WDS-ITO. Je resterai décidément à l’affût de la version préliminaire des résultats finaux, dont la publication est prévue dans le cadre de la Semaine internationale des données, en octobre.
Je n’ai pu aller au EuroHPC qu’une seule journée, mais j’ai senti que ce sommet visait à renforcer le rôle essentiel que jouent les données et les logiciels dans le paysage de l’IRN – ces deux mots ayant été utilisés plus souvent que tout autre terme, du moins le jour où j’étais présent. Avec la formation à la RDA de groupes axés sur les logiciels émergents et le nouveau matériel (p. ex., FAIR4ML, FAIR Principles for Research Hardware), je vois là encore une évolution positive de l’intérêt continu que porte la RDA au paysage élargi de l’infrastructure de recherche numérique.

Puisque je suis une nouvelle venue dans la communauté de la RDA, ma participation à la 20e plénière de la RDA à Gothenburg a été une occasion fantastique d’en apprendre davantage sur le travail de l’organisation et de la communauté, de même que pour tisser des liens avec des collègues de partout dans le monde. J’ai suivi le parcours thématique axé sur les logiciels de recherche, donc j’ai assisté aux séances en sous-groupes des groupes thématiques (Birds of a Feather) et groupes d’intérêt sur la visibilité du code, la reproductibilité computationnelle et l’importance de rendre les logiciels reproductibles. La communauté internationale des logiciels de recherche est des plus engagées et mobilisées. J’ai été ravie d’avoir la possibilité de mieux connaître de nombreuses parties prenantes et d’échanger avec elles tout au long des séances. Ma participation à la séance Research Software Workshop: guidelines and metrics for metadata curation, organisée conjointement par les équipes de projet FAIR-IMPACT et FAIRCORE4OSC, mérite également d’être soulignée.

Avant la 20e plénière de la RDA, la Research Software Alliance (ReSA) et la RDA ont tenu une réunion conjointe hybride entre le forum des bailleurs de fonds des logiciels de recherche et le forum des bailleurs de fonds de la RDA. Cette rencontre a été un moment fort pour moi, puisqu’une partie de mon rôle en tant que gestionnaire de la communauté ReSA consiste à gérer le forum des bailleurs de fonds des logiciels de recherche. L’intérêt et l’attention de ce groupe de bailleurs de fonds mobilisés à l’égard des logiciels de recherche ont permis de renforcer l’importance du travail accompli dans ce domaine.

Ma participation à ma première conférence internationale a été une expérience incroyablement enrichissante. J’ai pu rencontrer mes collègues d’outre-mer en personne et renforcer mes liens professionnels. J’ai aussi eu l’occasion de faire connaissance avec de nouveaux collègues et membres de la communauté de la science ouverte, ce qui m’a permis d’élargir mon réseau interprofessionnel (et celui de l’Alliance). Les diverses conférences auxquelles j’ai assisté m’ont fourni de précieux renseignements sur les initiatives et projets en cours qui façonnent l’avenir de la recherche. En tant que représentant de l’Alliance, j’ai pu cibler de futurs partenaires potentiels, tout en cernant des initiatives et projets qui pourraient avoir une valeur ajoutée sur la recherche au Canada. Dans l’ensemble, la 20e plénière de la RDA a été une expérience d’apprentissage très utile et a ouvert la porte à de nouvelles possibilités de collaboration et de croissance.

Puisque la 20e plénière de la RDA avait lieu en mode flexible (hybride), c’était pour moi une excellente occasion d’y assister. Ma participation aux trois demi-journées de conférences m’a permis de me plonger dans la vaste gamme de sujets que traitent les groupes de la RDA, dont les données de recherche (p. ex., logiciels de recherche) et les cadres d’interopérabilité, mais également de découvrir leur volonté de suivre le rythme des technologies de pointe (p. ex., éthique de l’intelligence artificielle). La combinaison des notes fournies lors des séances collaboratives et des discussions interactives en sous-groupes m’a également permis de me sentir comme si j’assistais à la conférence en personne et de vivre la même expérience que les autres participantes et participants de la RDA.
