Meeting objectives
Research data are an asset for research institutions. Their creation, management and stewardship imposes considerable responsibilities and requires partnership and alignment with other institutions and research initiatives globally. All over the world universities and libraries have started the task of developing research data services. Ideally such initiatives aim to result in a complete service portfolio covering the entire research lifecycle: support in writing proposals and data management plans, repository infrastructures for the storage of data, support in publishing data, assignment of persistent identifiers, lecturing in data management, etc. This broad scope means that such services are often seen as requiring a joint effort from from university, library, IT centre, faculties and other stakeholders.
Nowhere in the world has such a complete support scenario been perfected. It is timely for actors in the various dimensions of such initiatives internationally to share their practical experiences, research and insights.
The proposed BoF Session will build on a pre-RDA Symposium that was organised in March 2017 by CODATA and the University of Göttingen. That event was structured around a various areas of activity to support RDM in research performing institutions. This provides a framework for analysis which will be enriched in further events and the BoF and will form the structure for a series of papers in a special collection of the CODATA Data Science Journal (imminent). The pre-RDA Symposium was followed by a number of session on RDM in institutions at International Data Week. With the support of and in collaboration with Drexel, a workshop inspired by the symposium will also be organised before RDA P13.
The objective of this BoF will be threefold:
To present a synthesis of the outcomes from the series of preceding events;
To propose a holistic framework for examining RDM development in institutions, building on the CODATA-Göttingen symposium and existing maturity models (e.g. DCC RISE http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/how-guides/RISE);
From this extract a set of priority areas where institutions are facing the greatest challenges.
The latter shortlist will be used to create a proposal for an IG on RDM in Research Institutions. The purpose will be to identify areas for ongoing discussion and inter-institutional knowledge sharing – and in all likelihood specific activities for future WGs.
The intended outcome is a plan of actions for an RDA IG to collaborate with other international organisations and research institutions on a series of activities to promote targeted knowledge sharing. This will likely include thematic workshops and a series of publications on the issues causing most difficulty for research institutions around the world.
The scope of this is distinct from that of the IG on Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions because it will take a holistic view, examining strategies, research and resourcing priorities, funding, policies and training. Where it is necessary to touch on RDM systems from a technical perspective, we will engage with and collaborate with the Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions IG.
 
Meeting agenda
The session will be led and facilitated by Simon Hodson, Jane Greenberg, Devika Madalli, Jan Brase and Michael Witt.
1) Short overview of initiative: state of the art of RDM in institutions, reviewing key findings of CODATA-Göttingen Symposium, IDW Sessions and Drexel Workshop (15 minutes).
2) Presentation of outline framework for RDM in institutions as a basis for inter-institutional knowledge sharing – including paper and electronic copies. (15 minutes)
3) Structured group activity and discussion. The objective will be a) to critique and refine the framework presented; b) to identify key challenge areas where knowledge sharing and collaboration will be valuable; c) to determine what sort of activities would help institutions address these challenges and whether these are in scope for an RDA IG. (40 minutes)
4) Summary and Next Steps. (10 minutes)
