BoF – Aligning Open Data and Data Reuse Expectations with Tools and Resources – RDA 13th Plenary meeting

Meeting objectives
The objectives of this session are to bring together individuals and organizations that are currently developing and implementing expectations of researchers for increased open data and data reuse (i.e., government and non-profit funders, publishers) and those developing tools and resources for researchers to meet those expectations, in order to: 1) assess how well those elements are aligned; and 2) where additional efforts are needed (e.g., refining and articulating expectations; developing, refining and communicating the availability of tools and resources). This session would build on an initial panel discussion on these issues at the AGU 2018 meeting held recently in Washington, DC. While RDA has several WGs and IGs involved in various elements of these issues, this BoF would be an opportunity to bring together those various workflows to “compare notes and directions”, and identify areas requiring more attention or adjustments of work effort, and determine whether existing or new fora need to be developed for longer term collaborations to flourish.
Meeting agenda
The session is designed as a round table where representatives from various constituencies of the global open data community will briefly highlight their primary open data/data reuse activities and objectives followed by a robust discussion and mapping exercise to identify how the RDA community could best align its efforts from expectations through tools and resources – all on behalf of accelerating open data/data reuse with the least possible burden on the research community.
Short description
Belmont Forum has been actively involved in the Data policy standardisation and implementation IG co-developing with science publishers a common Data Accessibility Statement for use both by funders and publishers, thereby preparing researchers to provide the same open data/data reuse information from the beginning to the end of a research project.
In addition, Belmont Forum has been a leader of the Map of the Landscape effort and other RDA training-related activities, and has been a regular participant in funder efforts to share and align open data/data reuse practices.
