DFIG at San Diego Plenary

    Dear DFIG colleagues,
Here at the San Diego Plenary we had 3 sessions that were related with the Data Fabric IG.
    – In the first plenary session we tried to inform people about DFIG goals and directions. For what we heard that session was very well perceived and people seem to understand the intentions and also the possible integrative power of DFIG.
    – In the DFIG core session we had 5 interesting reports about the 10 use cases we received so far. The meeting was devoted to the Use Case presentations and did not leave sufficient time for discussion. So the real work needs to start now. We agreed on the following
o We will ask all 10 (+5) use case providers to improve their descriptions if wanted and upload them within the next two weeks to the wiki space so that everyone can see them. For convenience I am attaching the 10 use cases again asking the authors to review them if wanted and upload them to the wiki.
o We will motivate more people to upload use cases to have a broad coverage. We sat a deadline for 19. April to get a new round of Use Cases.
o We will add a number of specific questions to quickly enter a more focussed discussion and facilitate the analysis work.
o Begin of May we would like to present a first of an analysis – I attach my slides for a first indication of the directions on slides 12 & 13.
o Also Begin of May we will organize a first virtual meeting to discuss this analysis.
o At the P6 meeting in Paris in September we definitively want to present a detailed analysis to have a real working meeting.
    – We had a BoF session on Repository Registries (RepReg) that offer data and data services (this could be a first component of Data Fabric)
o We had 5 contributions that all had to do with registry setups for repositories for large distributed situations. Afterwards we had sufficient time to discuss the question whether we need a system for repository registries. We had an intensive discussion. Instead of writing a report on the session we will write a paper that should include the main concepts and arguments. We will use the DFIG lists and wiki to interact about the RepReG ideas. So everyone who is interested should subscribe to the DFIG list.
o We built an editing team that will produce a first version: Herman, Peter W,, Michael Witt, Bob Hanish, Kamela, Mark vd. Sanden
