Dear Data Policy standardisation and implementation IG members,
On behalf of the co-chairs I’m pleased to share a report from our last meeting, at RDA P11 in Berlin:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SrjUPMGqF-C6zioOqZ4NsCkCtTTpENS5anSP
The report includes links to the presentations and other relevant documents. The summary and next steps is also below.
We will be in contact in due course with the next version of the framework.
    Kind regards
    Iain
    Summary and next steps
The third official meeting of the interest group (IG) presented the first draft output of the group and the feedback received on the output – a Journal and publisher research data policy master framework. IG members and the wider community now have until end of April 2018 to provide feedback on the policy framework, after which time the co-chairs will begin preparing version 1.3 of the master framework and begin drafting the policy templates. The co-chairs anticipate sharing these next documents July-September 2018. The co-chairs will also determine if a working group (WG) needs to be formed around the master framework output or if the activity continues as an IG. A related project on standardising Data Accessibility Statements (DASs) – a key part of journal data policy – managed by the Belmont Forum group of funding agencies was also presented and discussed. The Belmont Forum project is holding monthly calls over 2018 and aims to present their next findings at RDA 12th Plenary.

    Hello Iain and All,

Is there any further update from the April 2018 note above?

In particular I am looking at supplemental data again.  At present we generally treat it as one of the publication files rather than a dataset on our repositories.  The lines are blurred.  It looks like we will need to retain a way to identify that there are supplemental files rather than the final dataset at least for the medium term due to the implementation issues noted.

If there are any other thoughts or outcomes to this discussion would be interested to hear.  Perhaps there is another meeting planned soon and there willl be an update.

Related to this I irritated a chemist at a recent RDM session when she asked about supplementary data and, thinking of this IG, I suggested the sector should be moving away from supplementary towards data repositories. She was on the editorial boards of a couple of journals and said that in her experience they were seeing more supp data, not less, and that she certainly didn’t have time or inclination to also prepare data for a repository. Perhaps highlights a disciplinary specific issue? (I didn’t find out what the journals were!)

    Dear Valerie, Dear all,
The Data Policy Standardisation and Implementation IG is being presented at the RDA Plenary happening today, at 14,00 local time (12 noon GMT) in Botswana. Please see for more information:
    https://www.rd-alliance.org/joint-meeting-wg-biosharing-registry-and-dat
Including how to join the session remotely. Please join if you are able to (apologies it is very short notice).
Unfortunately none of the co-chairs of the group were able to attend this RDA Plenary, but my colleague Varsha Khodiyar at Springer Nature will be presenting, on our behalf, a recap of the group’s work to date and sharing an update on the next steps for the group, including timeline for the revision to the master policy framework that was presented in Berlin in March.
This session is a joint – informative rather than working – session between the Data Policy Standardisation and Implementation IG and the FAIRsharing WG, in collaboration with the Belmont Forum, who will update on their Data Accessibility Statement project too.
I hope to see many of you online later today, and in Philadelphia in person in 2019.
    Kind regards
    Iain
