Submission for a virtual Side Event; 8 March 2024

    Title
AI governance for building community-based data systems for achieving the UN SDGs and real-world outcomes
    Abstract
This side event presents three governance tools developed by the European Open Science Cloud – Future and Research Data Alliance ‘Artificial Intelligence & Data Visitation Working Group (AIDV-WG)’ governance outcomes impacting data disciplines, sectors, and systems for engaging digital communities in building data systems for achieving the United Nation’s 2030 Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) and through real-world outcomes. This interactive session addresses the Track 1 Theme on ‘Rapidly emerging frontier technologies and emerging science issues and sustainable development’ by providing a policy framework for addressing the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI).
The side event will report on the implementation of three globally developed AI policy guidances of key importance to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs:
    1. Guidance for informed consent in AI and data visitation
    2. Guidance for ethics committees reviewing AI and data visitation
    3. Guidance on the development of AI Bills of Rights
By focusing on harnessing the power of digital communities, this policy approach promotes innovative approaches to the governance of data collection, analysis, and utilization for sustainable development. It facilitates the exchange of best practices, tools, and methodologies for engaging digital communities in generating high-quality data and translating it into tangible outcomes that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. The session supports the interests of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York on 18-17 July 2024 with particular relevance for the role of AI ethics, policy, and governance in the HLPF 2024 theme: ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions’.
The side event prepares potential contributions to the UN Summit of the Future in New York on 22-23 September 2024 regarding the development of the ‘Pact for the Future’ and its foreseen action oriented in the ‘how’ – here through AI ethics, policy, and governance – of cooperation towards better preparation for the world and the international system to manage current and future challenges for the sake of all humanity and future generations. Through knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships, this science-policy approach helps to advance the global agenda for sustainable development and build momentum towards achieving the SDGs by 2030.
The session will focus on practical insights, case studies, and best practices drawn from UN initiatives and regional and national initiatives to foster innovation and empower digital communities to contribute to effective governance for data-driven decision-making and sustainable development efforts in an AI-age, thereby amplifying the impact of responsible and ethical interfaces between science, policy, and society.
