Tabula 2018: The Historical Archives of the Future
The first result in Google for the word ‘archivo’ in Spanish is the definition of Wikipedia in its computer meaning: “a set of bits stored in a device…” The search in English for ‘archive’ directly returns the URL of Internet Archive. The impact of these results and their perception by users is proportional to the importance of who recovers and presents the information: Google, the web with more accesses in the World, and Wikipedia, the most consulted web of contents, with thousands of queries per second every day.
These results contrast with the digitization efforts made by the archives and more specifically by the Historical Archives. One of its consequences has been the spectacular increase of its documents online, but at the same time the equally spectacular decrease of in person consultations in most of them.
Historical Archives face not only the dematerialization of records and the challenges of digital preservation but also the virtualization of their users and, at the same time, the competition for their identity and public interest in the digital information universe. Achieving the visualization and to promote interest in the authenticity of documentary sources are really new challenges, but not the only ones. The dizzying evolution of technology and the changes in social habits suggest a great impact on Historical Archives in the short-term.
In Tabula we want to go beyond experiences in digitizing and publishing content online, or using social networks. The aim is to reflect on the role of Historical Archives and project it to the expectations of the 21st century in the new social and technological contexts and, therefore, also to rethink the services they provide.
The fields of interest (not limited) for Tábula 2018 are:
    1) The role of Historical Archives, perception and social use.
    2) Technology and Historical Archives.
    3) Services’ innovation to users
In addition, we would like trying to answer, among others, the following questions:
    – Will the Historical Archives continue to be “Historical”?
    – Will the preservation role be the same? Will they do it in the same way?
    – Will it be possible to apply Big Data technology on the Historical documents?
    – How to preserve, disseminate and take advantage of the massive datasets?
    – What will be the incidence of Artificial Intelligence on Archives in the future?
    – Will online Archives be equally trustworthy for users?
    – What role can or should the Archives play in the fake news context?
    – What will be the professional profile of the researcher?
    – What new skills should the profession acquire to meet their needs?
    – How to raise new challenges of dissemination and audience participation?
    – Are there successful experiences on gamification in the archives domain?
    – What new services for what new kind of users?
    – Can we create “Community of Archive’ Users”?
Texts could be research articles or essays with a recommended extension of between 5,000 and 6,000 words. Instructions of publication (in Spanish*) at http://acal.es/index.php/publicaciones/publica-con-nosotros
*Please, don’t hesitate to contact if you have any doubt about it: text will be translated in Spanish and final format will be adapted.
    Sincerely,
Asociación de Archiveros de Castilla y León (ACAL)
