Long Tail of Research Data- ideas for topics at next meeting

27 Jun 2014

Hi all,

With the deadline rapidly approaching (July 1), I will be submitting a request for a time slot for the Long Tail group at the next RDA meetin in September.

I would very much to hear your ideas for topics of discussion at our next meeting. What would you like to know about what others are doing? Where are you having challenges?

A reminder that at the last meeting there were suggestions along these lines. Do any of these especially reasonate with you?

  • evidence to incentivize researchers to deposit
  • creating environments to make it easier for researchers to deposit their data,
  • sharing practices about discovery,
  • interoperability across repositories
  • preservation planning

Please let me know if one or more of these is of special interest to you, or if other topics come to mind so we can build an interesting and relevant agenda for the meeting.

Thanks!

Kathleen

Thanks Kathleen. I am interested in all the suggested topics here, but particularly interested in the 3rd and 4th points in the list.

Would it be worth considering addressing discipline-specific data practices in the humanities and arts (including the liberal arts and creative arts)? I always feel I could do with more information about current data practices in the non-science disciplines - but only if this was of interest to the group, of course.

    Best,
    Laura

    Dear Kathleen,

Thanks so much for organising this. As you know this is a critical period in Europe mostly because of the preparation of the EC Horizon 2020 proposals. As the mobilisation of long-tail research is more socio-cultural than technical, I think we should consider the incentivising methods that engage end-users as cornerstone activity. There are a lot of initiatives in this field that are related to peer-review publications, impact metrics etc.

In this context I think that the second in your list is very relevant and could be included in an overarching incentivising environment discussion topic.

    Looking forward to this.

    Kind regards,
    Dimitris

Thanks, Kathleen - and all sound of interest.

One additional area I'm very interested in is just what types of data are in this 'long tail'? Either evidence that people have or what we expect.

I am still struggling with understanding just what we as an institution need to be prepared to cope with and what can and should be passed over to trusted external repositories/centres.

    All the best

    Anna

I agree with that, since as we all know metadata are critical for reuse.
There is a key point on how to find the metadata to use in a given
    disciplinary context...

    Hi Arturo,

I fully agree that this is a trend that is worth discussing, especially
wrt long tail data (i.e. not massive-volume
    worth-it-to-automatize-everything data).
I personally think that though it is a move in the right direction, it
is also a hack of the existing publication system, and it is not the end
goal that we would all want.
I would be happy to discuss this at the plenary with you all.

    Cheers,

    Herman

    Hi Kathleen, all,

all mentioned topics are interesting and important.

In addition (I know they might overlap with other RDA IG/WGs)

    * current practices to measure impact of datasets by quantitative and
qualitative (wrt. formal quality of a dataset) indicators, e.g.
    http://stats.datacite.org/

    * comparing RDM implementation and policies specifically for the Long
Tail data around the globe (at least Europe, North America, Australia),
e.g. institutional research data infrastructures vs. national ones.

    Best,
    Jochen

    Hi Kathleen, all

Yes these topics resonate with me, especially 1-3.

Regarding #3 would it be worth adding "...and maximising discoverability"?

    best,

    Angus

Good points. Related to indicators for impact measurement, perhaps it's too
soon to get into analytics but further down the road some gap analysis
(e.g. what types of RD seem to be flourishing vs obvious absences) might
help in reaching to "obscure" communities. Thus an early discussion on how
to use such indicators for gap discovery might be helpful.

    Hi Angus,

I received your message through the list serve (see below and here: https://www.rd-alliance.org/group/long-tail-research-data-ig/post/long-t...).
Maybe you just don't get a copy sent to you, when you send it?
Can you double check your settings on the mailing list?

Thanks (and thanks for your comments)!

    Hello all,

I am particularly insterested in identifying common requirements for preservation across different communities.  Especially for provisioning a domain-agnostic preservation solution to cater for the countless small communities which don't aready have a domain level repository.  Or are unlikely to ever have one.

I think that identifying common requirements is crucial if we are to be successful in reaching out to the long tail of research data.

    All the best

    Matt

    Thank you, Kathleen.

I am particularly interested in discoverability and interoperability,
with the emphasis on metadata that Anne & Francoise mention.

    Best,
    Amy
