There is a growing interest in Virtual Research Environments (VREs, also named Science Gateways or Virtual Laboratories) as instruments to support research communities in cooperating and performing their scientific activities. Several VREs are now operational and a number of VRE frameworks have been developed to facilitate their creation. All these components rely on services provided by underlying e-Infrastructures. This workshop intends to bring together experts from complementary domains to discuss what cores services VREs should provide to facilitate collaborative research activities and to identify the services that e-Infrastructures should make available to support them. The outcome will be beneficial for all the research infrastructures and other initiatives that at the moment are tackling the issue of developing VREs. In particular, it will be used as an input to the design of the Architecture of the European Science Cloud (https://eoscpilot.eu/). A report of the workshop will be produced.
The workshop is primarily intended to be a by invitation only working meeting attended by participants from different areas: i) representatives of domain-specific Infrastructures, (ii) computer scientists and IT researchers involved in designing and development VRE related facilities (e.g. VRE/science gateways enabling frameworks, Computer-Supported Collaborative Work, Scientific Workflow Management Systems), and (iii) representatives of RDA Working groups on topics related to the VRE design and development.
