Context

The goal of the CODATA-RDA Summer Schools in Data Science and Cloud Computing in the Developing World WG is to set up a series of Summer Schools in Research Data Science with an emphasis on supporting researchers from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC’s) - though researchers from other countries are welcome. The longer term goal of such schools are to enlighten the current generation of early-career reseachers on the importance of data sharing, analysing and storing it appropriately and this effecting the goals of the RDA itself. This meeting will provide a status update on the progress that has been made, an outline of the tasks ahead for the remainder of the duration of the WG and a consideration of future plans beyond the present school series.

Objectives

  • Give progress update on schools.

  • Provide set of tasks for the remainder of WG.

  • Consider options beyond the duration of the WG.

Agenda

  • Presentation of progress.

  • Discussion of future plans.

UK Data Archive, ideas for social science flavour of data science summer school

Plans we have for 2016-2017 for RDM training, summer schools, data science, with focus on wider social sciences / data from human participants:

    1. Through an ESRC-funded project in partnership with DataFIrst, we will hold a summer school in Cape Town in early 2017, using household enery data / big data as case study. The course will (tentatively) cover:

    • Data brokering and governance
    • Disclosure risk and data access pathways
    • Quality assessment and description of data
    • Data publishing and research transparency

    2. The ICPSR 'Curating and Managing Research Data for Re-Use' 5-day summer school that we have been co-lecturing with ICPSR for a few years now (see for 2015 http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/sumprog/syllabi/136291 ) will in 2016 be held in Europe, most likely in Athens, August 2016. ICPSR continues to coordinate, but delivery will alternate annually between USA and Europe.

We're keen to explore synergy with the RDA/CODATA summer schools.
