I have a degree in Systems Engineering (Catholic Bolivian University), a MSc in Bioinformatics (University of Geneva), a PhD in Bioinformatics (Ghent University / Flanders Institute for Biotechnology) and a Master degree in Terminology (Pompeu Fabra University). I am currently appointed as Senior Data Management Scientist at Bayer CropScience (Belgium) and I also hold a position as Associated Scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway). My work is focused on the application of Semantic Web technologies for knowledge management and terminology management in the life sciences. I am particularly interested in the area of bio-ontology engineering and biological knowledge representation. My research on applying semantic web technologies in the systems biology domain resulted in the creation of various biological knowledge bases, including BioGateway and the Cell Cycle Ontology, as well as a new approach: Semantic Systems Biology. I have also developed several software packages (e.g. ONTO-perl) to integrate and manipulate bio-ontologies. I have been invited to several meetings as keynote speaker or expert consultant in the area of biological knowledge management in the life sciences. I have served as reviewer for several journals (e.g. Bioinformatics/Oxford and Briefings in Bioinformatics) as well as for public funded projects (e.g. EU). I work currently on Master Data Management and Data Governance for supporting R&D activities in agricultural applications.
