Tomoko Shirai finished her PhD in atmospheric chemistry at the University of Tokyo. She worked as an engineer at the Earth Observation Research Center of National Space Development Agency of Japan (currently JAXA).Thereafter, she joined the Rowland/Blake laboratory of the chemistry department at UCI as an associate research specialist. She joined National Institute for Environmental Studies in 2004. Her present research is focused on the environmental impact of atmospheric trace gases, especially greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, halocarbons) and nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs). She also develops a database (Global Environmental Database) and foster open science in the planning section of NIES.
