Summaries from each country’s national PID strategy were presented at the RDA Plenary 17 National PID Strategies BoF and updates provided at the RDA VP18 WG meeting: Aligning and coordinating national PID strategies. In this session, progress updates will be focussed on the guide, the case studies, and those countries represented in the working group.

Target Audience:

Researchers, PID providers, research information managers, publishers, policy makers, funders, service providers, and anyone with an interest in PID integration and adoption. This session will appeal to anyone who wants to find out about the progress made by this working group, national PID strategies from different countries, and the plans for adopting and integrating PIDs to support open, responsible, and reproducible research, for example, as well as supporting research integrity and transparency.

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group:

At the RDA Plenary 17 a Birds of a Feather session examined six case studies of national PID strategies and frameworks, looked at commonalities and divergences between them, and assessed the potential benefit of collaboration and alignment in the development and implementation of future national initiatives.

The consensus from this BoF was that a National PID Strategies WG should be formed with the objective of enabling coordination and community discussion to deliver the following:

  • Coordinate and align different national PID strategies and bring together PID experts to support the group
  • Map common activities across national agencies/efforts and produce a guide on the specific PIDs adopted in the context of national PID strategies
  • Agree PID categories and define common metadata and standards for PIDs
  • A minimal set of PIDs for international interoperability
  • Example ideas on governance and common workflows
  • The benefits from having a national PID strategy and adopting priority PIDs and the investment requirements.

The Working Group’s case statement was presented and reviewed at the RDA VP18 WG meeting in the Aligning and coordinating national PID strategies session. This included updates from the countries represented in the BoF plus updates from other countries interested in joining the group.

The Working Group became recognised and endorsed on 10 December 2021. The group has held meetings during its first 6 months and this plenary session meeting will provide a progress update on these first 6 months and present the first outputs (guide and case studies) from the group.

Short Group Status:

The working group start date was 10 December 2021. By the time of the RDA19 plenary the group will have been running for 6 months. The work plan for the first 6 months includes the following:

0 - 6 months - map common activities across national agencies/efforts and deliver a guide on the specific PIDs adopted in the context of national PID strategies. This will help others, irrespective of geographical region, follow a blueprint to define their national PID approach.

0-12 months - seek community input to agree on PID categories and define common metadata and standards for PIDs, define a minimal set of PIDs for international interoperability, and provide example ideas on governance and common workflows.

In this session, we will present the draft version of the guide, which will include national PID strategy case studies from 4-5 different countries.
