Architecture or Not?

Gary asked if I would post a copy of the questions I asked Beth at the NDS meeting last week in Rockville, MD, and of course I'm happy to do so. I am encouraged by the ongoing DF discussions. This is a new post instead of a comment to Gary's prompt, in case we wish to gather architecture related conversation in one thread.

I asked Beth two questions:

RE: [rda-datafabric-ig] Data Fabric Wiki etc

Dear DF group,
Herman and I updated the wiki yesterday and created a few sub-pages to add various types of information/documents.
Have a look at the DF group wiki:
I also uploaded a document which Keith, Gary and I created:

Data Fabric Ideas discussed at National Data Services Conference in Rockville MD

Several RDA members were at the recent NDS meeting and there was mention and discussion of Data Fabrics as of interest to the NDS folks. Beth presented slides on DF which was followed by discussion sparked in part by John Henry's questions.  I asked John to post it on this forum and some of us (Beth, Kathy, Larry and myself) who responded can pen our thoughts afterwards.

Alan also promised to have some Qs or comments to this forum all of which I hope will contribute to our IG and white paper moving forward. Ed Seidel may also have some comments.

A use case from the National data Service (NDS)

I noticed that NDS has a sample use case and it seemed like it would be of interest to keep as part of our collection of use cases.  Note that it cites among other things the Virtual Observatory which was also discussed at our BoF session at P4.  Robert Pennington of NCAS may have more to say about this exampe since NDS is under him...

Using the NDS: a scenario

To illustrate how a scientist might use the NDS, consider this scenario for astronomy research which we think can be realized:

Survey analysis results of RDA Europe data architectures .

Peter mentioned at various meetings some survey analysis results of the data architectures within RDA Europ organizations of the communities.  He noted that it is available.

I've taken the liberty of attaching a draft of this report which I am sending on while Peter is on his much earned vacation.

Notes of DF IG/BoF Meeting at P4 20140924

I've finally gotten and had time to go thru Keith's excellent notes from our DF meeting at P4.  I've added a few things to it such as Beth's diagram and some info from my briefing slides along with some notes that I had.

I'm sure that there are still things that could be added such as long, summary comments from Tim and others, but I hope this will serve as a base and people can comment and even edit if they think it useful.

RE: [rda-datafabric-ig] Should we consider the SO Reference Model for Open Distribute...

Thanks Gary and Keith.
I share the concerns from Keith in so far that before introducing or agreeing on a formalism (whatever it is) we need to understand what the use cases are which we can take as basis for our elaboration. We need to be grounded in such models or use cases since otherwise we will end up in theoretical discussions. And as Beth suggested we should be willing to do certain demo cases that may explain what we are aiming at.

Posting file attachments to IG file system

I've noticed that the files we attach when posting make it through to email to the people registered.  But they don't go into the IG file system unless someone adds them.  This means that if people learn about the IG later and register they miss the email and have difficulty finding what has been attached to the posting unless we put them also in the file system.

Should we consider the SO Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) model for structuring their analysis?

Alan provided some cautionary advice on the impact of model complexity as we go forward with more structure and functional details.  We have a start on a ReUse scanario from Beth and that version has detail to start with.

John Henry proposed a system engineering view...
