Dr. Michael Freilich

by Suchith Anand

On August 5, the Earth observation community suffered a huge loss with the passing of Dr. Michael Freilich.  Dr. Freilich was the former head of NASA Earth Science Division and a distinguished member of the United States Delegation to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). Under Dr. Freilich’s leadership, NASA has been a significant contributor to GEO, providing funding, expertise and leadership to a vast majority of the GEO efforts, helping to lead and shape global Earth observations activities to positively impact our planet.

Ethics of Digital Feudalism in Citizen Science

by Suchith Anand

As Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is used for many Citizen Science projects, I am interested to learn more on Digital Feudalism and its impacts in Citizen Science. [1] Since the use of GIS cloud platforms for citizen science data collection and data analysis is having a huge impact on citizen science community,  I would like learn more on this. With  the rise of Digital Feudalism and  its impacts on Location data, it raises many ethical questions.  - Are there any examples of Digital Feudalism in Citizen Science projects?

Ethics of Digital Feudalism in Location Data in Agriculture

by Suchith Anand

Agriculture is an important source of livelihood for millions of small holder farmers globally. Digital technologies plays a crucial role in promoting agricultural productivity, improving rural livelihoods, and increasing small holder farmer incomes.  Smallholder farmers manage over 80 percent of the world’s estimated 500 million farms, providing over 80 percent of the food consumed across the developing world, and contributing significantly to poverty reduction and food security.

Ethical dimensions of Digital Feudalism in Agriculture

by Suchith Anand

The increasing use of digital technology in agriculture has marked the start of a major transformation: Better services and products, innovations, enhanced decision making and increased profitability and productivity. But do small holder farmers really benefit equally, or even at all, from the benefits of data sharing? Moreover, do all stakeholders in the agricultural sector have the same access and control to these insights? What concerns do farmers have on such issues as data ownership, access and control, security and privacy?[1]
