Collaborative session notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZrY6iEndAi7X2CDlirmMiIR9fhyHA652fjgVKnGMoFg/edit?usp=sharing

1. Discussion about International Materials Resource Registries (IMRR) WG final report being submitted and possible transition to a Task Group, 5 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion: Chandler Becker and Ray Plante, NIST

2. Presentation & update of Task Group on Materials Ontologies, 5 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion: Cate Brinson, Duke University; Gerhard Goldbeck, Goldbeck Consulting; Clare Paul, AFRL

3. Presentation, panel discussion, and general discussion of:  How can the universe of diverse RDA outputs be assembled, integrated, harmonized, and leveraged to enable FAIR data for the full materials data lifecycle with particular attention to:

  • PIDs for Samples; PIDs for Instruments; FAIR data/resources; Data Type Registry; Programmatic linkages to Ontologies/Vocabularies/etc

60 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion; presenter & panel members: Zach Trautt, NIST; Asahiko Matsuda, NIMS representative from Asia and representative from EU; (EU representative to be named in the near future.)

Meeting objectives:
1. Discuss final report of International Materials Resource Registries (IMRR) WG being submitted and explore possibility of establishing itself as TG
2. Present update of Task Group on Materials Ontologies
3. Present, with a panel discussion, and general discussion of RDA recommendations/outputs for adoption by Materials Data IG

Target Audience:

Materials scientists and engineers as well as data scientists with interests in materials science are the target audience.  Review of past meetings and outputs are a good revies for the meeting.

Short Group Status:
The RDA/CODATA Materials Data, Infrastructure, and Interoperability (MDII) has held regularly bi-annual solo sessions and initiated joint sessions with cognate domains, such as the Photon/Neutron IG and technical groups, such as Metadata IG; developed and completed a productive WG on resource registries; has established a materials ontology TG; as well as has one of the largest IG members list in RDA.  The International Materials Resource Registries (IMRR) WG is submitting prior to P14 a final report with recommended basic materials vocabulary.  The Task Group on Materials Ontology began its work at P13 and since that time has held one teleconference call and will hold one other F2F/teleconference call before meeting at P14.
Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group(s):
Three materials focused groups (IG, WG, and TG) are jointly contributing to the session with one co-chair needing to leave on 10/25 and another co-chair participating remotely in the ET time zone.
The Materials Data, Infrastructure, & Interoperability (MDII) was founded in 2013 and aims to foster exchange of computational & experimental materials data through shared online repositories, standardized formats/terminologies & open programming interfaces.
The International Materials Resource Registries Working Group focused on developing the metadata standards required to establish a network of IMRRs in key sub-domains and regions.
The Materials Ontology Task Group is part of the focus of the Materials Data Interest Group and concentrates on upper level ontology use/best practices/issues for materials as demonstrated in existing domain ontologies.
