Short introduction describing the scope of the group and if any previous activities
This Interest Group is an evolution of the previous Working Group CODATA/RDA Summer Schools for Research Data Science in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).
The Interest Group will continue to work toward the goals set forth by the previous Working Group, which founded to set up a series of Summer Schools in Research Data Science for Early Career Researchers (ECRs). In particular, the Schools offer a model for providing that cohort with a set of foundational skills for analyzing, managing, visualizing and processing research data. The schools were specifically to be delivered to ECRs from Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The first of these Schools ran at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, in August 2016 and two more Schools ran in 2017 (in July at ICTP Trieste and in December at ICTP Sao Paolo, Brazil). All three schools have been considered hugely successful by the hosting institutions, the school's directors, and most importantly the students.
The initiative is continuing with support and engagement from both CODATA and RDA. There are a number of significant outputs which will be the focus for discussion: the model for the curriculum as a broad but shallow foundational course in essential data skills for researchers; the materials which can be reused and refined (and approaches to making this process as effective as possible); the model for building a network of schools; and the participants and instructors as the agents of this.
We will continue in 2018 with a return to Trieste in August, we are looking into proposing a repeat of the Sao Paulo school in December 2018, and a possible third school in Sub-Saharan Africa (exact location and dates not yet confirmed).
The organizers would like to discuss their vision, invite feedback and seek guidance and engagements from participants in relation to future activities.
