Research data needs of the Photon and Neutron Science community IG

IG

Group details

Case Statement:
IG Established

Status: Recognized & Endorsed

This Interest Group will focus on data related issues of science applications associated with large scale source facilities, including: synchrotron x-ray sources, free-electron laser x-ray sources, reactor and spallation neutron sources, muon sources, large electron microscope, NMR and high-powered laser facilities, which are used typically for investigations into the structure of matter at micro or nano scale.

These facilities are characterised by a central facility providing access to scarce and specialised instruments which are typically beyond the means of single research groups, and are thus shared and used by many research teams to conduct experiments.  These experiments come from a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, biology, metallurgy, engineering, materials science, palaeontology and archaeology. The user communities are rather heterogeneous, volatile and globally distributed. Issues to be tackled are hence bound to be global and interdisciplinary requiring a decent level of standardization and interoperability.

PaNSIG @ RDA plenary 13 in Philadelphia, US?

Dear all,
I recently had a chat with Frank Schlünzen about PaNSIG: I believe,
there is some room for new activities. On the one hand, there are
some things going on in other RDA groups that might be of interest for
the PaN community, namely:
* Persistent Identification of Instruments WG
This group seeks to explore a community-driven solution for globally
unique identification of active instruments in the sciences. At the
last plenary P12 the group presented a first draft of a meta data

PaNSIG @ RDA plenary 11 in Berlin

Hi all,
the next RDA Plenary Meeting will take place in March 2018 in Berlin.
We took the opportunity to organize a collocated workshop on
Scientific Data Management for Photon and Neutron Facilities.
The workshop will be on
19th and 20th March 2018
at
Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie
in Berlin.
For more details, see the workshop page at

PaNSIG at RDA 9th Plenary?

Hi Folks,
RDA 9th Plenary in Barcelona is approaching. Will there be a PaNSIG
session? In Denver, we discussed the idea to take the opportunity
that Alba is just round the corner, so we might have some extra PaNSIG
event next to the plenary. Is anything going to happen in that
direction?
Best regards,
Rolf

Re: Session update for RDA 8th plenary sessions

Hi again,
apologies, I somehow messed up the times. The first session is of course

Session update for RDA 8th plenary sessions

Dear PaNSIG and MDIIIG members,
the RDA 8th plenary and IDW are just a few days away, so I thought to give a brief update on "our" sessions:

Request for information and participation in RDA Data Formats session

Hello PaNSIG and MDIIIG members,
In preparation for the upcoming RDA 8th Plenary in Denver, I am collecting instances of "HDF in the wild". That is, I want to know how you are using HDF, what conventions and wrappers you may be using around it, and are there ways to improve its usability for your community. I am asking you to provide me a few brief bits of information that I can include in a presentation to prepare us for a discussion on this topic.
