question about multiple vocabs for use in faceted navigation

08 Oct 2015
Groups audience:

Hello all,
At the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) we host Research Data
Australia , a discovery service for
collections of Australian research data. We currently use several
controlled vocabularies (including a high level "fields of research" vocab)
to describe items in RDA, and are looking to improve our subject browsing &
faceting.
I'm wondering if you have worked with or have heard of tools that make use
of multiple controlled vocabularies in one faceted navigation system...
perhaps where drilling down through one high-level vocab will allow the
user to select concept(s) from a more specific vocab that has been mapped
"into" the hierarchy.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
All the best,
Jane

    Hi Jane,
I use the EBI ontology lookup service, and NCBI’s BioPortal. They serve non-biological ontologies too, so don’t let the names put you off!
Also there is the ISA-tab creator tool that we use at Scientific Data. This allows the selection of several different ontologies within each of the specific ISA-tab fields. You’ll need to use this tool in Firefox rather than Chrome and it is a little buggy, but it does allow browsing of several ontology/structured vocabulary terms at the higher level.
    Hope this is helpful!

Thanks Varsha, these are very helpful! I was aware of BioPortal, but not the file creator tool... really intuitive. I like the view available directly in the form & the fact that the user can go into more detail with "see all term results". The tool seems buggy even in Firefox...

    Hi,
We are working on a dedicated NCBO Bioportal instance dedicated for Agronomy.
Here is the link below. AgroPortal Search : http://agroportal.lirmm.fr/search
Please contact Dr Clement Jonquet for additional questions.

thanks for responding. We're actually looking to allow for browsing (drilling down into) multiple vocabularies rather than search across many vocabularies. I don't see that AgroPortal allows for this... am I missing something?

    Hello,
I know that Bioportal and Agroportal have ontology updates from their sources automatically. Clement could certainly give more details.
