Date:
16 Apr 2019 to 21 Apr 2019

ECMWF presents the second Edition of the ECMWF’s Summer of Weather Code (ESoWC) 2019, an initiative to promote innovative weather-related open-source software. Developers from all over the world are invited to submit a proposal to solve one of the new challenges addressed by ECMWF’s mentors this year. Only the five best submissions will win £5000 each and the opportunity to develop their projects under the umbrella of ECMWF expertise.

Until 21 April 2019, software developers, start-ups, weather professionals and data scientists are called to take part in this open online programme designed to develop weather data technologies. Participants, applying as an individual or as a team, can choose among the new challenges listed in this edition 2019, all aim at streamlining and supporting daily activities at the ECMWF.

At the end of April/beginning of May, the five best software solutions to the challenges in terms of feasibility, innovation, future proof-approach and transferability, will be announced on this website as winners of ESoWC 2019. The five selected candidates / teams will be awarded £5000 each and get the exciting opportunity to team up with their ECMWF mentors.

The coding period, from 1 May to 31 August, encompasses four months of intense teamwork when developers and mentors will collaborate closely in the development of the shortlisted proposals. The release of the five open-source projects, doubtless a fruitful contribution to support ECMWF and its Member and Co-operating States, on the 20th September 2019 will conclude the ESoWC 2019.
