Ahead of our P20 session (now scheduled for Breakout 4, 10.00 UTC on Wednesday 22nd March (Increasing the positive impacts of journal policies on data sharing practices)) we are running a workshop which will build on the plenary session we held back in June at P19. To keep things interactive we are planning for a relatively small group, but please do go ahead and submit your contact information if you’d like to participate. Workshop: Improving the Quality and Utility of Published Data Availability Statements
Building on the work of the Research Data Alliance’s Data policy standardisation and implementation IG, this workshop, aimed at academic publishers and associated stakeholders, intends to explore how the quality of published data availability statements (DAS) can be improved.
While journals increasingly require authors to provide a DAS with their manuscript, the limited information provided by many DAS – such as those stating “data available on request” – reduces their utility both for readers and authors, and for those wishing to analyse data sharing activities (e.g. funders, meta-researchers).
In this collaborative workshop we will:
* Review the current quality issues with published DAS
* Identify practical improvements that could be made to increase the utility and quality of information included in DAS (which may include editorial workflows, policy implementation, production or operational approaches etc)
* Establish consensus and support for collective action to improve DAS quality
* Identify next steps and propose what a useful output of this work would be.

The organisers:
This workshop is being organised by the co-chairs of the Research Data Alliance’s Data policy standardisation and implementation IG, which aims to develop common frameworks for research data policy implementation and increase the adoption of (standardised) research data policies by all stakeholders.
Dr. Rebecca Grant is Head of Data & Software Publishing at F1000, where she supports the development of policy, guidance and publishing workflows to encourage researchers to share open and FAIR research data.
Iain Hrynaszkiewicz is Director, Open Research Solutions at Public Library of Science (PLOS), where he leads a programme of activity to increase adoption of open science practices. This includes initiatives relating preprints, open data, open code, and open methods and protocols.
Natasha Simons is Associate Director, Data & Services, for the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). She leads a team working to improve infrastructure that supports FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data.
