BoF Scientific File Formats

Outline:
The SFF BoF aims to set the scene for the proposed IG on Scientific File Formats (IG-SFF) and WG on HDF5-filter-extensions (WG-HFE). The IG-SFF intends to identify common issues on open scientific file formats like capabilities, evolution, interoperability, funding or sustainability of scientific file formats, questions which might also relate to rapid evolution of scientific instruments and e-infrastructures. A major goal of IG-SFF is to initiate WGs - such as WG-HFE - tackling specific, well-defined issues on scientific file formats. The HDF5-filter-extension WG intends to deal with one specific, very recent extension of HDF5 enhancing essential high-throughput capabilities. This modular extensions are operating outside the HDF5-core and hence require some operational framework to fully exploit the capabilities and maintain core characteristics like platform independence. The BoF session intends to outline definitions, issues and boundary conditions for scientific file formats; to establish concrete work plans and strategies.
