Tentative agenda for RDA4 meeting

07 Jul 2014

Dear all,
I have collected all your inputs for the proposed RDA4 meeting. Below
you have the tentative proposal, of course this is not closed and we can
make it better from now to the meeting in Amsterdam. We have to submit
the meeting proposal today, so any input or revision during the day is
appreciated. My apologies if I failed to include something important, in
that case, just let me know.
By the way, I invite all of you to register in the new mailing list:
***@***.***-groups.org. You can do it via the Web page of the IG:

The newly created IG on Education and Training on research data aims at
having its first meeting at RDA4. We plan to have two sessions and we
estimate an audience of 40+ people. Ideally, the meetings will not be
scheduled in conflict with the Libraries for Research Data (others?)
sessions.
Tentative agenda
·Definition of the spectrum of data professions
·Approach to define the professions-competencies matrix.
·Domain-specific presentations:
oSocial sciences (Alexia Katsanidou, Leibniz Inst. for the Social Sciences)
oAgrifood sector (Vassilis Protonotarios, AgroKnow)
·From the WG Data Science Summer School -- discussion on delivery and
teaching modes. (Hugh Shanahan, U. London)
·Open resources and MOOCs on data professions (Valerie Brasse, IS4ri)
·Cases and experience:
oData curation teaching in the information science curriculum (Andrew
Cox, U. Sheffield)
oAPARSEN training/qualification in science data preservation (Matthias
L. Hemmje, FTK)
oCODATA work on Capacity Building (Simon Hodson, CODATA)
For domain-specific presentations, the structure of the presentations is
suggested as follows:
1.What type of data are used in your discipline and what are the
problems/difficulties they pose
2.What skills do the data professionals need to have (potential
differentiations between data collections and secondary data users?)
3.What trainings are already offered, plus an assessment if they are enough
4.What is still needed, and how could a collaboration with other
disciplines be of benefit?

    Dear Miguel-Angel, dear all,
Thank you very much for collating an initial agenda, which seems fine to me, and reflects the contributions made by IG members over the past week or so.
There is a risk that we end up with a long shopping list of themes which might be difficult to fit into a single session, particularly if we extend the number of domain-specific presentations. To avoid this situation, I wonder whether we might ask potential contributors to summarise in writing, maybe on a single page, issues relating to their disciplines, using your suggested four-point template to structure the descriptions (we could, for instance, restrict the number of words/characters so that the documents remain relatively short and accessible). In that way, we could have a useful preliminary resource in advance of the meeting, and might thereby be able to make more efficient use of the time available to us at the plenary.
My only other comment, on the template for the domain-specific presentations, is that the 3rd point might include an indication of the certification currently offered, as well as the training.
    Best wishes,
    Stéphane

    Dear all,
I completely agree with Stéphane and particularly with the importance of
    sharing something in advance.
