24 September 2015- BREAKOUT 6 - 15:30
Attendees are invited to this birds of a feather meeting to discuss:
* The issue of dealing with instrument-derived data in non-standard formats
* The social and commercial challenges faced in affecting positive change in instrument and sensor manufacturers' software
* Unified strategies to encourage instrument manufacturers to support data output in open standardised formats
Through this discussion we aim to achieve a broad set of objectives and strategies focused on instrument data openness which can be further refined and executed in the capacity of a Research Data Alliance Interest or Working Group.

Hi,
I thought it might be of interest: folks from HDFgroup and the RDA Photon and Neutron Science IG made a similar - albeit less focussed - attempt at a previous plenary, see https://rd-alliance.org/bof-scientific-file-formats.html (slides: https://indico.desy.de/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=10956).
Though the activities didn't really continue - apart from ongoing work on HDF5 & NeXus - the topic is of course still very interesting for us, in particular the last point "Unified strategies" (we actually succeeded in one case to "encourage" a detector manufacturer ;-): https://www.dectris.com/successstories.html?page=2 - doesn't happen very often though). Would be nice if the BoF continues as an Interest or Working group.
cheers, Frank.
