The effective dissemination and interpretation of scientific research data is heavily reliant on the utilisation of open and accessible data transfer formats. Many instrument manufacturers' software exports data in inaccessible and proprietary formats which make conversion to open transfer formats difficult or impossible, and thereby limit the ability of users to easily share their data with others.

Attendees are invited to this birds of a feather meeting to discuss:
* The issue of dealing with instrument-derived data in non-standard formats
* The social and commercial challenges faced in affecting positive change in instrument and sensor manufacturers' software
* Unified strategies to encourage instrument manufacturers to support data output in open standardised formats

Through this discussion we aim to achieve a broad set of objectives and strategies focused on instrument data openness which can be further refined and executed in the capacity of a Research Data Alliance Interest or Working Group.
