DMP Common Standards WG - Kick-off call next week

06 Oct 2017
Groups audience:

Dear all,
we are writing to you because we have some new information concerning the
DMP Common Standards WG.
Our group is officially endorsed! Congratulations to all of you! The whole
process went very fast and smooth. This would not be possible without your
contributions and support. However, now it is time for us to deliver. The
clock is ticking and we have 18 months to produce outputs. This means that
in the 13th Plenary in 2019 we should be presenting them.
During the plenary in Montreal we have presented a vision for our WG. You
can find the slides here [1]. We have also prepared a plan of actions that
we would like to accomplish before the next plenary in Berlin in March 2018.
The general idea is to perform two consultations that will help us identify:
- how available information changes over the research lifecycle and
how requirements of specific stakeholders evolve over time
- what are the related existing standards, models, vocabularies,
ontologies, schemas, etc.
Based on the results of consultations we would like to create a first draft
of the data model. We are going to use the GitHub and will run local
workshops. We would like to introduce you to details of the plan during the
kick-off call.
We will organise two kick-off calls. This should give everyone a chance to
join - independent of the time zone they live in. Please help us identify
the best time slot by filling out the doodle poll. Please fill it out latest
by the end of this week, because on Monday we will be sending out
invitations for the chosen time slots that are next week.

We look forward to seeing you all in the kick-off call.
Kind regards,
Tomasz Miksa, Paul Walk, Peter Neish
Chairs of the DMP Common Standards WG

    Dear all,
Here you can find the meeting minutes of both calls that we held this week:
    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwdfVsSKpOzvbmIwdktuTllKS0U
In case you couldn't join us, here are the slides that are quite
    self-explanatory:
    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwdfVsSKpOzvUnd2bEFnT3dIMlk
We have agreed on our timeline and proposed work packages. The immediate
step is engaging people with our consultation.
The aim of the consultation is to identify which information can be provided
by whom, and who is later needing this information. Based on that we can
identify which fields are needed in the model and which systems can
automatically provide or consume this information.
    https://github.com/RDA-DMP-Common/user-stories
Please help us circulate the information about it and provide your inputs:
    - Create issues on GitHub
    - Organise local workshops with interested stakeholders to jointly
    identify user stories
    - Share documents, reports, user stories that describe requirements
    of various stakeholders
Later we will re-organise the issues and prioritise them. This will help us
define the scope of the model and get better understanding of requirements
    for supporting infrastructure.
We look forward to your contributions!

Subject: [dmp-common] DMP Common Standards WG - Kick-off call next week
    Dear all,
we are writing to you because we have some new information concerning the
    DMP Common Standards WG.

    Hi all,
I tried to join the meeting this morning, but technology conspired
against it -- it turns out WebEx doesn't play well with Linux users.
    ** Introduction round **
    Your name: Paul Millar
    Your location: DESY, Hamburg, Germany
Your role: hmmm, perhaps "wearer of multiple hats"
    * 'technology provider' as a developer
working on large scalable storage software,
    * 'user community representative' (to some extent)
    various photon-science and high-energy particle
    physics scientific communities,
    * 'Storage Service Definition' (SSD)
Working towards a common vocabulary[1] that should
be useful when describing what people want from
    storage.
    [1] https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/storage-service-definitions-wg
Desired outcome: start a dialogue that explores
the potential for collaboration between SSD
    and this group.
SSD is about providing precise terms that may be used directly with
storage by scientists, used during procurement process, when
provisioning resources for particular user(s), etc.
I would imagine that a well-written DMP should contain some description
of the scientists' expectations of their storage system(s); for example,
likelihood of data-loss, guarantees on performance, geographical
    locality, service availability, etc.
Therefore, I can imagine there is some overlap and (therefore)
possibility for collaboration between this group and SSD.
    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Dear Paul,
Thank you very much for reaching out to our group. We've been looking for
synergies with other groups and your work perfectly makes sense in our
    setting.
Our group is planning to develop a core model that allows to plug in domain
specific models - storage is definitely one of the extension we need.
I have also checked the description of your group. It looks that we share
the same view that needs of all stakeholders involved in the research data
lifecycle can only be addressed when the data management workflow becomes
automated. To achieve that we need supporting systems and machine-readable
    representation of information.
One thing that we're trying to sort out now is the need for information at
each stage of the research lifecycle. For example, when a DMP is created
before a research projects starts, then an estimation of the storage needed
and it's cost is most likely what's needed. However, when the project runs
and the DMP is updated because it's a living document, then we definitely
will need more information. This is the point where I would see the
application of what you're working on.
If you were able to share your views on what information is needed by whom
and when by contributing to our consultation on GitHub it would be great.
    https://github.com/RDA-DMP-Common/user-stories
We can also set up a call to discuss further collaboration.
    Best wishes
    Tomasz
