    Dear Colleagues,
    RDA10 is coming up and I would like to give you an update on activities on data versioning in RDA. Having progressed from a BoF at RDA P8 to an Interest Group, results were presented and discussed at RDA P9 in Barcelona. This session generated a lot of interest from RDA groups that also look at topics related to versioning, i.e. citation and provenance. We discussed whether we should merge our activities with one of the other groups but came to the conclusion to keep it separate. Versioning of data is a fundamental element of other activities that depend on versioning and we felt that it should not be informed by any particular perspective. On the other hand, we have made good progress in collecting use cases and best practices that we felt confident to convert the Interest Group into a Working Group.
    The transition to a Working Group means that from P10 we have 18 months time to produce an outcome. This could be a recommendation for data versioning practices and policies. To inaugurate the Working Group we have submitted a session proposal for RDA P10 https://www.rd-alliance.org/wg-data-versioning-rda-10th-plenary-meeting.
    Meeting objectives:
    * To establish an RDA Working Group on developing agreed practices for Data Versioning and develop a work plan.
    * Seek further documented cases where groups/organisations are undertaking versioning;
    * Develop a white paper on best practices for versioning for spectrum of data types (files, databases, unstructured data, model runs, etc., including assignment of persistent identifiers).
    Meeting agenda:
    1. Introductions
    2. Why, How and What of Data Versioning
    * Why – case statement (Lesley Wyborn)
    * How – overview of identified practices (Jens Klump)
    * Where – Lightning presentations
    3. Develop work plan for RDA WG on Data Versioning.
    Target audience:
    Anyone who is interested in moving data versioning forward. We particularly welcome contributions on use cases of data versioning and data versioning policies.
    If you have further documented cases where groups/organisations are undertaking versioning, please send them to us to add to our working materials.
    We are looking forward to seeing you at RDA10 in Montreal.
    Regards,
    Jens Klump, Lesley Wyborn and Robert Downs
